Knockout kicks up heels
Melissa Anderson is a Muay Thai kick boxer but you wouldn’t be able to tell. Melissa is dressed by Miss Manfield, Mooloolaba, with hair and make-up by Angie and Hayley Harrington of Sorrentos, Mooloolaba
MELISSA Anderson is an impressive woman – tall, slender, with bright nails and long lashes.
The one thing that really sets her apart is that she loves to fight.
During the day, Melissa sells cakes at Priestley’s Gourmet Delights but when the working day is over she transforms into a Muay Thai kickboxer.
Her passion for a full contact sport has helped define who she is, developing her fitness, mental strength, sense of discipline, and her ability to look after herself.
But it has not made her any less a woman.
“I fight in a skirt; that’s pretty feminine,” the 29-year-old said.
“I am a blokey chick, there is no doubt about that.
“Growing up with no mum and all boys had something to do with it.
“At the same time I still love everything girlie. I get my nails done before a fight, top up the fake lashes.
“I love all the feminine stuff.”
Melissa’s mother passed away when she was a child, so she grew up with six brothers and often spent her holidays doing Zen Do Kai karate at her older brother Steven De Lyster’s dojo.
With martial arts in her blood, she progressed to Muay Thai.
“I love every aspect of this sport; the training leading up to a fight, the mental challenge and stepping in that ring,” she said.
“This sport is not for the weak. They call it the science of eight limbs – punches, kicks, knees and elbows. Lethal.
“My main goal in life is to stay fit, be happy and healthy. I love the fitness side of Muay Thai and really enjoy it at the same time.
” I feel better now at age 29 than I did at 20.
“Fitness is a massive part of my life that I wouldn’t change for anything.”
Melissa had her first fight in 2005, recording a victory.
Since then she has built an impressive record of being unbeaten in all 11 fights – the latest victory coming just a week ago.
To achieve her goals, she trains twice a day, as well as Saturday sessions up Mt Coolum or on the beach.
The sport is also where she met her husband Joel Anderson, also a Muay Thai kickboxer.
“I met that gorgeous man doing the sport I love. We trained at the same Muay Thai gym, met and fell head over heels for each other and married a year later.
“Our sparring sessions can get interesting.”
Despite her admissions that she’s a “blokey chick”, Melissa jumped at the chance of a glamour photo shoot with the Daily.
“I do love hitting the salon and getting all dolled up and gossiping with the girls.
“I don’t get to do it that often so that’s probably why I enjoy doing it so much.
“It’s amazing how a hot dress, make-up and a great hairdo can change the way you feel about yourself – glamorous on the outside but still the blokey chick on the inside.”
