Muaythai Charity Challenge as talent spotting platform

KUCHING: The highly anticipated Sarawak Muaythai Charity Challenge Series 2 this coming Oct 13 is expected to see greater participation from muaythai (Thai kick-boxing) exponents from in and outside the state.

Joint organisers Kelab Muaythai SS Fighter Petrajaya and Kelab Muaythai Kenyalang said following the successful staging of the Series 1 from June 30 to July 1 this year, they are organising the second series at the multi-purpose hall of the Youth and Sports Complex here in search for more potential talents.

“We are also expecting muaythai fighters from Selangor, Labuan and Sabah to join in the competition, making it a national affair,” Kelab Muaythai SS Fighter Petrajaya president Sulaiman Salleh told The Borneo Post yesterday.

According to him, fighters from six clubs in Kuching and Lundu namely Kelab Muaythai SS Fighter Petrajaya, Kelab Muaythai Kenyalang, Kelab Silat Muaythai Lempong, Kelab Muaythai KPS, Kelab Muaythai Sejoli Reds and Kelab Muaythai JBL Lundu will be vying for top honours in the four categories.

The categories are Professional (Men and Women), Amateur (Men and Women), Beginners (Men and Women), and Children (Boys and Girls) Under-12.

“The competition is limited to about 70 participants and there will be 10 bouts for the Professional and 10 bouts each for the Amateur and Beginners categories while there will be six bouts for the Under-12. So, interested parties should submit their entries early to avoid disappointment,” said Sulaiman.

He added that the objectives of the competition were to introduce and promote muaythai in Sarawak, getting the youths to involve in healthy sports activities, and to unearth new talents.

“Muaythai has been included in Sukma 2014 to be hosted by Perlis and we are hoping that through the two series, we are able to unearth new talents and groom them to represent Sarawak as well as for other national championships,” revealed Sulaiman.

He said proceeds (after deduction of costs) from organising the competition will be donated to children from orphanages.
